[LUG.ro Mix] pebrot

Hola, buenos dias, tengo instalado Red Hat Linux release 7.1 (Seawolf) 
Kernel 2.4.2-2 on an i686, quiero instalar pebrot, baje el archivo pero 
cuando le hago un
tar xzvf pebrot.tar.gz , empieza a descomprimir y a lo ultimo me dice

sjsv1 $                             
         
luego le hago un
sjsv1 $ cd pebrot-0.8.7
sjsv1 $ ./setup.py

SyntaxError: invalid syntax     

em el README dice que necesito el Pythom 2.2 o superior, baje el 2.4

cuando lo descomprimo de la misma manera
sjsv1 $ tar zxvf python-2.4.tgz
empieza adescomprimir a tambien  a lo ultimo me dice           
"tar: Skipping to next file header...                                   

alguien sabe que estoy hacioendo mal?
